Der Maler Basil fertigt ein Porträt des jungen, gutaussehenden Dorian Gray an. Als Dorian das Porträt zu Gesicht bekommt, wünscht er sich, dass das Gemälde an seiner Stelle altert, damit er seine Schönheit auch im Alter bewahren kann. Sein Wunsch geht in Erfüllung!
Dorian stürzt sich in ein ausschweifendes Leben und schreckt auch nicht vor Erpressung und Mord zurück. Dorians jugendliche Schönheit bleibt erhalten, während in seinem Porträt die ganze Verderbtheit seiner Seele zum Vorschein kommt…
Oscar Wildes Roman ist eine moderne Version der Faustlegende, ein Literaturklassiker des 19. Jahrhunderts, der die Dekadenz und den Ästhetizismus des fin de siècle zeigt.

| Dorian: | Yes, but shall I always be glad? |
| Henry: | 'Always' is a dreadful word. People are so fond of using it. Every romance is spoiled by trying to make it last forever. |
| Basil: | The portrait is finished. |
| Dorian (looks at the portrait): | How sad. I shall grow old, but this picture will always remain young. If only it were the other way and I could always be young while the picture grew old. For that - for that - I would give my soul. |
| Basil: | Don't you like it? |
| Dorian: | I am jealous of everything whose beauty does not die. |
